Happy Release Day; CRIMSON MEMORIES #99Cents #Steampunk #ASMSG #Erotica

Today is release day for my first steampunk fairytale, CRIMSON MEMORIES! Yey!

To celebrate, here’s a steamy excerpt for your reading pleasure.

Enjoy!

CrimsonMemories_ebook_Final“Wait, Petra! Don’t go!” I dashed through the gathering of tall evergreens, slapping branches out of my way.

Her mass of wild hair swayed from left to right as she raced through the forest. She ran fast, so fast it was difficult to catch up. Soon, I lost the visual of her. She had disappeared.

“Petra!” I continued to move forward, hoping and praying she would come back to me. “Petra!”

“Yes, Argon?” purred a woman’s voice from the shadows.

I stumbled to a halt and glanced around my foreign surroundings.

She sauntered from behind a large oak, no longer a young lass, but a striking woman with bodacious curves that could shake the world. An impish smile curved her plush lips. Everything about her appearance was hypnotizing.

I couldn’t look away, even if I wanted to.

She was stunningly beautiful. Her slightly flattened nose, high cheekbones, and kissable lips were works of art. And her body… She swayed when she walked. Voluptuous breasts protruded from her chest in glorious splendor. Haloed at the tips were perfectly round areolas and hardened nipples. The chain she’d worn as a girl still resided around her waist, sparkling like diamonds against her swarthy skin and clinging lovingly to her wide hips. A triangular patch of dark curly hair covered her mons. She approached me with the lethal grace of a predator.

Panting helplessly, I reached out for her.

She skipped backwards and began to circle me, sashaying on her toes. She moved so fluidly, I thought she would twirl into a ballet at any moment. “Are you hunting me, Argon Quinn?” Her voice was a breath of silk, brushing over me like a soothing wind.

“I am,” I admitted with no shame. “You captivate me.” Like her, I had changed. My timbre had deepened greatly, my body had stretched. I was now a man, suffering the primal longing for the elusive siren before me. “Are you going to continue to make me chase you?”

“I think I will.” She ended her roundabout, tilted her head playfully, and then darted behind another tree.

Husky laughter shook my chest as I went in pursuit. “Such a teasing temptress.” I rounded the evergreen, and she wasn’t there.

She appeared from behind the adjacent tree. “You like to be teased and I like it when you chase me. It makes me feel wanted.”

I dared a few steps forward. “And want you, I do. Would you like to know what I plan to do once I get my hands on you?”

The question sent a visual shudder down her form. Her lips parted, eyes widened.

Taking one lengthy step, I lunged for her.

Determined to keep the space between us, she leapt backwards. “I would encourage you to enlighten me, but I’d rather you save it.” Leaving her girlish laughter echoing across the forest, she vanished behind another tree, only to reappear behind me. “You can surprise me…” Her breathy whisper feathered the shell of my ear. “That is, if you have the will to catch me.”

CRIMSON DAYS

**dystopian sci-fi, paranormal, erotic and interracial romance**

Chapter 3

Piles of dead bodies covered the open field.

Stunned speechless, I watched my fellow knights systematically drag vampires from the sewer passageways and stake them to the ground, forcing them to suffer daylight. The trees in the area had been trimmed away so there would be nothing obstructing the sun’s deadly rays. There had to be more than a hundred dying demons spread out over the field, and more deceased ones heaped in piles along the perimeter.

As the sun baked their flesh, the seared skin peeled off, fluttered into the air and disintegrated into dust, creating the miasma that poisoned the atmosphere.

Some creatures clawed and fought to stay underground. Those who put up a fight swiftly met their end, by means of a silver blade or UV bullets. Men, women and children alike, festered away in screaming pain.

Several knights approached the demons with large mallets and machetes. Heads were severed or smashed into bloody messes.

Lifting his mallet in the air, a bulky knight stood over a young pale-faced boy.

The boy screamed at the top of his lungs. “No! Please…!” He looked my way and reached out for me. “Please, help me!”

The pain in his eyes tore at my heart. I’d never seen a child vamp before.

His fangs were small, though I’m sure they were no less lethal. Beneath an expression stricken with fear, his face was a picture of pure innocence. Drawn into the dark life against his will, he would never grow up, or have his first kiss. Where he lay, staked to the earth, was his death bed.

I took a step forward, just as the knight brought the mallet down on his face, crushing his skull, cutting his piercing cry short. I gasped and sucked back tears.

Without the least bit of remorse on his face, the soldier moved onto the next vampire, who unfortunately was also a child. It wasn’t bad enough they were frying them in the daylight sun, they had to bash their heads in too.

“Get a fire going!” one of the knights from the other squads hollered out. “The bodies are piling up. Let’s burn these sonsabitches.”

The sickening sensation in my belly grew, almost to the point where I wanted to vomit. “Who are the monsters here? Them or us?”

The knights near me whipped their eyes in my direction. My question also garnered the attention of the commanding officer, Commander Cannon.

He wore a permanent scowl, one that tarnished his otherwise handsome features. His bright golden eyes narrowed. “Are you opposed to this mission, Officer Winsort?”

Clive Owens as Commander Cannon

Clive Owens as Commander Cannon

I didn’t answer. I just held his golden glare, doing my best not to let my razor tongue fly.

“Knights, your orders are clear,” he said in a demanding tone, directing his words to the whole squad. “There are hundreds of hostiles hiding out in those sewers. They have burrowed deep within. As you can see, the first squadrons called to the site are in the process of extracting the hostiles closer to the surface. Your job is to enter the underground maze, hunt them down and exterminate with extreme prejudice. Any target that makes it pass this squadron will meet the knights above and be taken care of. Those are your orders. They are to be carried out before nightfall.” With his directive lingering in the air, he pivoted on his heels in a robotic motion and marched over to where the other head officers convened.

I never liked that man. In his presence, I got the major hibbie jibbies. There’s something off about him, something not quite… human.

My fellow knights rushed off to fulfill their duty, but I couldn’t move. I was rooted to the patch of bloody dirt I stood on. Hunting vampires who attacked me was one thing, but going after them like this… women and children, people I know… “This isn’t right.”

At my side, Steve tugged on my hand. “Alex…?”

“I’m not doing this.”

“Alex, we have to follow orders.”

“This is a monstrous act, a massacre.” I snatched my hand away from him and shook my head. “I’m not doing this shit,” I voiced a little louder.

Sanjay was several feet from me, heading toward the sewers with the others, but when he heard me, he spun around. “What’d you say?” Before I knew it, he was in my face. “Tell me I did not just hear you refuse to carry out a direct order.”

“You heard right. I’m going back to the ship.” I turned to walk away.

Sanjay grabbed my arm in a biting grip. “Alexis…”

In a flash, I had my hand wrapped around my gat with the barrel pressed into his stomach.

A smirk curved his plush lips as his dark eyes glimmered in amusement. “You’re gonna shoot me, babe? Your superior officer?”

“If you don’t get your goddamn hand off of me, I just might.”

Seconds of fraught silence hovered between us before he said, “You know what? I don’t get you.”

“Really? What’s new?” I countered snidely.

“You kill vampires on a daily basis, skillfully, without batting an eyelash, but this is a problem for you.”

This is not what I signed on for. I’m not about to start slaughtering children.”

“They’re not children, Alexis. They’re demons.”

“You’re the demon!” I shot back on a hiss. “And if I cross this line with you, I’ll be a demon too.”

The smirk drifted from his lips and gave way to a teeth clenching frown. “If you back out on this, you’ll have to answer to the commanding officer, and I won’t be able to protect you.”

I jerked my arm from his clutches. “You and the commanding officer can kiss my ass. I refuse to let you strip me of my humanity.”

For the first time, Sanjay glared down at me with hate-driven anger in his eyes. I’d only seen him offer vampires that look. “Then that’s going to pose a big fucking problem for you.”

“Uhhhmmm, let’s take a deep breath, guys, and try a different approach.” Facing Sanjay, Steve sidled in between us to push us apart. “I have a solution for this problem that you may want to hear. We can run a perimeter sweep.”

Eyes still locked on mine, Sanjay muttered, “What?”

“Some of the vamps are liable to pass this point. Like earlier. With me and Alex running the perimeter we can make sure none of them flee into nearby town to infect more people.” Steve shot a glance over his shoulder at me. “Good idea? Right, Alex?”

I clucked my tongue, whirled on my heels and stalked away from them. “Whateva.”

Still clutching my pistol, I trekked deeper into the forest, away from the carnage and the light. There were shadows all around me, cast by the large trees and their branches. The haze from the dead vamps loomed in the area and thickened around my feet, yet I continued to move forward.

Steve lumbered behind me, quietly.

I appreciated his silence, but it didn’t help calm the rage boiling within me. “Children, Steve… Children! What the hell have we become?”

“I know. It’s fucked up,” Steve said, keeping his distance. “Try to cool off, ma. You can’t have another run in like that with your superior officer, even if he’s your boyfriend.”

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t clear my mind of the horrific actions I’d witnessed. I saw the mallet slamming down onto the child’s head over and over again, like a motion picture on playback. His eyes bulged, his blood and brain matter splattered over the ground, his skull crushed…

My eyes stung, my chest tightened. It was a devastating vision, one I wouldn’t soon forget.

I stopped and lifted my head. Suddenly, I had that feeling again—the feeling like I was being watched, and it wasn’t by Steve. I heard soft breathing close to me, like someone was standing right beside me, but no one was there, aside from the looming darkness. The presence…

“Lexi,” whispered a haunting voice from the shadows.

An icy chill darted down my spine.

“Lexi, please don’t be sad.”

Something brushed across my cheek. Leveling my gat, I swung around.

Caught in my gun’s path, Steve jumped back and threw his hands in the air. “Hey-hey now! Take your anger out on the vamps and your man, but not me.”

“Did you hear that?”

“Hear what?” Brow quirked, Steve reached over his shoulder and grabbed his sword’s hilt. “I don’t sense anything.”

If the bloodhound didn’t pick up on a threat in the area, then I had to be spazzing out over nothing. Right? If so, why couldn’t I shake this feeling?

“Why am I the only one feeling this and hearing voices?” I grumbled frustratingly.

“Sure it’s not in your head?”

I cut a glare at him.

He shrugged. “Just sayin’, nothing gets past my senses. Nothing.”

Whipping my sights from the left to right, I eyed the roaming patches of darkness that seemed to gradually close in around me. “I could’ve sworn I heard someone call out to me, and… and touch my face.” I took a shuffling step backwards. “Earlier, there was this presence—” The ground suddenly fell out from under my feet.

Steve lunged forward and caught my hand before the earth could swallow me whole.

“What the hell…?” I regained my footing as I stared down at the fog covered crater in the ground. “What is this?” It was hard to make out.

“Looks like a hole. A big one. Let’s see how deep it is.” Steve plucked a radar sphere from his holster.

The device leapt from his palm, fell the short distance then hovered over the indention. It sprouted blue laser-like beams, making it look like a miniature disco ball. Once the rays were done whipping about, it let out three beeps.

He read the results registering across the screen on the forearm of his armor. “This hole is almost eight feet long and four feet deep with claw marks etched in the dirt. Looks we found ourselves a fresh grave.”

So not all the vampires sought refuge in the underground sewers. Smart move. “Not a surprise. This is the perfect spot, a lot of shading, very little light. Wonder how many more we’ll find out here.” I couldn’t stop myself from peering around cautiously. I wanted to believe I’d been hearing things earlier, but I had a gut feeling I wasn’t.

“Good thing I suggested a sweep, ay.” Steve slid his fingers across the screen on his forearm. “I’m deploying a few droids to assist us. I think we should move this sweep further out…”

“Lexi…” The ghostly whispers echoed across my mind like a sweet caress, blotting out Steve’s voice. “Leeexi.”

I shook my head and pulled my mask off. The tainted air immediately assaulted me, making me want to gag.

“Alex, you hear me?” Steve asked.

“Yeah—yeah, you said something about deploying droids,” I muttered absentmindedly. With my thoughts drifting a million miles away, I headed for the ship.

“Where are you going?”

“To get my tranq rifle. Any kid vamps come across this area, I’m putting them to sleep and then turning them over to the CRF.” At least the Cross Research Facility wouldn’t kill them, but study them instead. Rather that, than getting baked in the sun and getting their heads bashed in.

“Ahh hell, Alex,” he groaned. “You shouldn’t have told me that. Now I’m an accomplice to your treasonous plan.”

The phantom voice… He called me Lexi. Why Lexi? There was only one man who addressed me by that nickname, and he disappeared well over ten years ago.

“Please don’t let it be him,” I whispered as I moved deeper into the shadows.

CRIMSON DAYS

**dystopian sci-fi, paranormal, erotic and interracial romance**

Chapter 2

Miles from the mission site, the scent of festering flesh and boiling blood tainted the air. Locked in the confines of the aircraft, we hovered right below the clouds, and I could still smell the stench.

Suppressing the need to gag, I folded over and groaned.

“You’re looking a little green, babe,” Sanjay teased as he dangled my headgear in my face. “Need your helmet?”

I snatched it from him. “Asshole.”

Most knights didn’t bother to wear the breathing gear attached to our helmets. They were used to the demonic miasma the vampires leaked into the air. Not me though. Years ago, the scientists confirmed the vapors weren’t hazardous to our bodies in any way. Like horrible farts, the smell was putrid, but it wouldn’t kill you if you breathed it in. Didn’t matter to me what they proved; I still refused to suck that demon crap into my lungs.

I watched some of the other knights don their headgear. I clearly wasn’t the only one.

“Why are we going on a hunt this early in the day?” It was meant as an inner thought, but I heard myself say it aloud. “Most vamps don’t ease to the surface until twilight, and even then, they wait until darkness falls.”

I didn’t think Sanjay heard me over the hum of the ship’s engine, but he proved he did, when he answered, “I think the federation and the Vatican are tired of waiting for them to rise to go on the hunt. We gotta cut their numbers down, drastically, so it’s time to shake the tree. Every time someone goes missing we have to assume they’ve been turned. Have you seen the reports on how many people disappear every month? Entire families and shit…?” Settling back in the seat, he shrugged. “I don’t know all the deets. Don’t really care. I just follow orders.”

“Yes. Of course you do,” I huffed out on a sigh. “I don’t know why I would expect you to question the commander’s orders.”

Lips twisted in a smirk, he cut his eyes at me. “You know it turns me on when you get snarky.”

The aircraft shuddered as it lowered from the sky and landed on a clearing surrounded by a heavily wooded area, near the city’s sewer system.

As soon as the hatch opened, the shrieks and the sizzling sound of cooking flesh assaulted my ears. A familiar sickening feeling arose in my belly. I always got this sensation before going to battle. “Into the fray we go.”

I followed the squad through the copse of trees, watching our backs as I went. I always flanked the team. Never knew when the undead would creep up on you from the rear.

Sneaky bastards.

Sanjay usually flanked with me, but today he led the squad, next to our commanding officer, which made sense since he was the lieutenant in our division. Regardless of rank, it was better this way. I’m sure he took that spot to avoid hearing more of my complaints. To be honest, I was tired of hearing my gripes as well.

“Trouble in paradise?” Steve moved to my right side, flashing a mannish grin. Cornrows, patterned in a zigzag design, were neatly layered over his head.

I rolled my eyes and snorted. “Always. But if you ask Sanjay, he’ll say everything is honky dory.”

Steve chuckled. “That’s Sanjay for you. He’d rather pretend everything is all good than to admit he’s losing you.”

Frowning, I slowed my stride. “Wait, you know?”

He allowed the squad to trot ahead before turning to face me. “That you want out? Yeah, I know.”

Damn. And here I thought I was putting on a great façade. “Is it that obvious?”

Steve

STEVE

He smiled. “Lucky for you, our commanding officer isn’t as good as reading people as I am.” Offering me his hand, he nodded toward the team. “Come on, Alex. We’ll chat about this later.”

Behind him, the bushes rustled. A snarl sounded, a second before a black blur darted from the underbrush. It moved in on us with a sinuous motion.

Gripping Steve’s hand, I yanked him against me and raised my pistol. Instead of aiming at the fast moving entity, I anticipated where it would strike and fired.

The creature hit the ground, shrieking like a banshee.

The moment I laid eyes on its pain-stricken face, I wanted to cry. It was Emily, the young bookshop owner from uptown. I didn’t know her personally, but I knew who she was. It was enough to make my heart hurt.

The bullet that caught her in the heart released ultraviolet liquid into her body. A bright light illuminated beneath her breasts. Her chest cavity caved in and began to melt away. The sun cooked the rest of her, blistering her flesh, as she writhed about in agony. No matter how strong her healing abilities were, there was no coming back from this injury.

She will die, yet again.

Despite that, Steve shot her three more times, silencing her screams. “I hate to see them suffer, especially when it’s someone I know.” A wry smile tilted his lips. “You see why we need you on the force? She would’ve had me if it wasn’t for you.”

Had him? Yeah right. I almost laughed. He and I both knew he’d been aware of the threat behind him long before I caught a whiff of the vampire. No one snuck up on the Bloodhound. “The same reason I’m needed on the force is the main reason I wanna get the hell away from here,” I countered, holstering my pistol. “I’d rather be on a beach somewhere, taking in the afternoon sun. Like the Bahamas. There are no vampires in the Bahamas.”

“That we know of.” He chuckled. “Still, if that’s where you’re headed, take me with you.” Suddenly, his eyes narrowed. “Head’s up. Twelve o’clock.”

I looked up just in time to see at a large dark figure coming down on us. Its limbs were stretched out, its mouth open wide, baring its glistening fangs.

Firing upwards, Steve and I leaped back from one another.

The vampire landed between us with a thud. Pale muscles bulged everywhere. He was one of the biggest ones I’d seen yet. Even though he’d been drilled several times with lethal bullets, he still aggressed.

I backpedaled as he thundered forward, reaching for me. He was so determined to get to me, he forgot there was a knight behind him.

The sharp ching of Steve drawing his blade resonated through the area.

My palm found the grip of my dagger. Pulling the blade from its sheath, I ended my backward drift and sprung forward. I spun around the creature’s left side as Steve spun around his right side. The sound of our weapons slicing through dead flesh echoed around us.

The beefed up vampire stumbled to a stop, yet to realize he’d been bested. A crimson line appeared over his neck and another one opened across his torso. Steam rose from his searing flesh as the sun’s rays sought him out through the openings in the tree branches. Slowly, his body slumped to the ground in three bloody chunks.

“Damn, he was a big’un.” Steve flicked the blood from his sword.

I swiped away the gelled scarlet crap that had spattered over my mask. “I know right. His muscles had muscles.”

“We’re usually a little more synchronized than that. You were a step off.”

“Don’t start riding me about my technique, Steve,” I grumbled, stepping over the festering flesh pile.

“Hey, I have to since I’m the one who trained you. And for the record, your technique is not the problem. I’m worried about your declining health. The fact you’re missing meals is starting to show.”

I sighed. “Don’t, Steve. Just don’t… You can get on my case about that another day, but not today.”

“Are we clear here?” Sanjay asked, jogging toward us. “Oh shit, was that Jean?” He moved closer and stared down at the vampire’s dismembered, simmering head. “Hell yeah, that’s him. He was a personal trainer at the gym downtown. I couldn’t stand his ass. I wish I would’ve been here to see ya’ll send him back to hell.”

“Anywayz…” I brushed past Sanjay, anxious to catch up with the rest of the knights. A thought came to me, bringing me to a halt. I turned to face the guys. “Hey, did ya’ll notice they attacked us in broad daylight? Why would they take the chance of revealing themselves to the sun? Even bloodlust wouldn’t force them to do that.”

A sadistic smile shot across Sanjay’s face. “The first infantry revealed another massive resting place and forced them out from the darkness. They’ve been hiding in the sewers.” There was an eagerness in his voice that struck me the wrong way. “Come check it out.” Sanjay waved for us to follow as he jogged ahead.

“Well, that explains the shrieking,” Steve grumbled, pulling me along with him.

“And the stench,” I added.

An odd feeling came over me—the feeling of being watched. I eyed the faint patches of shadows drifting behind the trees as I kept in pace with Steve and Sanjay. I gripped my G-four gat. There was a presence within the shadows following us. Although I didn’t know how, I could feel it. But, the way the guys were moving forward, it seemed I was the only one aware of it.

Or maybe I’m imagining things.

We cleared the thicket and came upon another clearing.

I was forced to suppress a cry. “Oh my Lord…” Nothing could prepare me for the horrific scene laid out before me.

CRIMSON DAYS, CH 1 #FREEREAD #asmsg #EroticRomance #DarkFantasy #Vampire #Erotica #dystopia #NIN

Hello, fellow readers, bloggers and authors!

It’s that time of the year again!

Time to celebrate horror, twisted minds and candy consumption. *insert evil laughter here*

In addition to Halloween, this month is a reminder to all women and men that breast cancer exists and it is a serious disease. It’s important to take the steps to detect breast cancer in its early stages. Click on the Breast Cancer Awareness image on the right side panel of this page to get information on how to get check for the disease and also how to donate to the cause.

Now, let’s have story time, boys and girls!

Starting today, I’ll be posting a new story for FREE. 2 chapters will be posted each week of this month for your reading pleasure. I will also post the images that inspired me to create the characters in this story. This is not a tale that I had sitting on the back burner or anything. This story literally came to me on a whim, so I’m writing it as I post it. It’s a new genre for me, dystopian sci-fi romance with a touch of steampunk. I haven’t done this before, so I’m treating this as a writing challenge. Let me forewarn you, it’s not edited or doctored up. It’s just me writing what my muse whispers in my ear. I really hope you enjoy it.

As the story progresses, please don’t hesitate to give feedback. I love to hear from the readers.

On a side note… Most of you already know I have a pretty vivid imagination and my descriptions are very graphic. Seriously, my tales come with a warning for reason. I’m going to insert that warning now and then move onto the story.

Enjoy!

CRIMSON DAYS

Chapter 1

The persistent banging on the front door increased the rapid thump behind my eyes.

Palming my forehead, I winced. “Hold on, Sanjay!” I splashed my face with a couple handfuls of water and stared at my reflection in the mirror. “Wow. I’m not even a shadow of my old self,” I murmured pitifully. In short, I looked a hot damn mess.

There were dark shadows under my eyes, due to lack of sleep. My chestnut skin tone had lost its healthy glow. I’m sure my poor diet had something to do with that. On some days I ate a little something just to fuel up and then on other days I didn’t eat at all. When your job requires you to spend most of your time around the walking dead and rotting corpses, it made it hard to work up an appetite. The woes of being a Cross Knight…

“Alexis!” Sanjay shouted through the door. “C’mon girl, we’re late! The hovercraft is waiting for us.”

“Geez, this man…” I grumbled under my breath. “He’s such a damn irritation.” I tied my dreads back from my face, adjusted the snug armor over my breasts and headed downstairs. “Who are you with?” I called out.

“I’m with you,” came his sultry response.

Alexis4

ALEXIS

When I got to the door, I glanced at the screen on the side wall to make sure he was alone. He had the aggravating habit of traveling with a military entourage when he came to my quarters. He knew I hated that crap. After I cursed him out about it the last time, he promised to never do it again. For once, he’d kept his word.

“Disengage security and open the door,” I ordered to my personal AI.

“Command confirmed,” the disembodied female voice replied as the seven locks on the door clicked simultaneously. “Door opening.” Most people preferred a physical android living with them, but not me. That shit was creepy. Their artificial human features made them even creepier. I preferred the security without a bot strolling freely around my quarters.

The door slid to the right and disappeared into the wall, revealing the man who once owned my heart.

“‘Sup, babe.” The brim of Sanjay’s hat sat low on his head, concealing his dark soulful eyes. “I feel like you’re avoiding me.”

“Because I am,” I retorted snidely as I shuffled aside to let him enter.

The stench of death lingered on him. Crimson spots marred his uniform and armor, which indicated he’d sliced up some vampires on the way over here. Typical.

His full lips twisted into a frown. “What’s been going on with you?”

Huffing out a sigh, I rolled my eyes. “Don’t be an asshole. Look at me.”

“I’m looking. I see you, babe.”

“Do you? Do you really see me?”

He stepped over the threshold, and tried to pull me into his arms. “You look beautiful to me, as always.”

I pulled away and headed for my weapon cache, with Sanjay swift on my heels. “You’re only saying that because you want me to go out hunting with you. My health means nothing to you.” The moment I approached my storage room, the retina scanner emerged from the wall.

Sanjay and I stood still as the machine identified us.

“Yeah, of course I want you to go hunting with me. That doesn’t mean I’m lying about you being beautiful…” He flashed the smile that always made my heart flutter. Today it didn’t have the same effect. “And it doesn’t mean I’m not worried about your health.”

“Whateva.” I walked into room and started collecting my weapons.

I always carried three daggers, three G-four gats and a laser rifle. When I first joined the regiment, the weapons weighed nothing to me. Probably because I had a purpose, or at least I thought I did. Now, they felt heavy as hell.

I found myself returning one pistol to its holder. “I feel sick and it’s getting worse.”

“Well, if you were eating like you’re supposed to and taking your vitamin pack…” he murmured, rummaging through my ammo. “You wouldn’t have this problem.

Heat flared to my face as I cut a glare at him. What angered me the most is he knew my diet has fallen off, but he didn’t bother to say anything about it, or at least try to help me through it. That told me one thing. He truly didn’t give a damn. All he cared about was this fucking war.

“Nothing else matters to you when it comes to the cause.” Sarcasm dripped from each word. “If I dropped dead, would you even bother to come to my funeral, or would you go out hunting to kill as many vampires as you can in my honor?

He flashed a wicked grin. “Are you trying to pick a fight with me, Alexis?” He eased up behind me and slipped a hand over my crotch. “If that’s the case, we can squash the argument and cut to the makeup sex right now.”

Groaning, I shoved away from him. “I’m serious, Sanjay. We’ve been at this for what… a little over three years now? There has to be more to life than this. More to life than the war, blood and death.”

He quirked a brow. “What are you saying?”

“Gaaawd!” I threw my hands in the air. “I swear it’s like talking to a brick wall with you. I’m saying the same thing I said yesterday and the day before that, and the day before THAT! I’ve been saying this shit for a year now, Sanjay. I don’t wanna do this anymore! I wanna pack my bags and get as far away from this war zone as possible.”

“And go where?” he asked beneath a sigh.

Anywhere but here.”

“Look babe, I know it’s hard, but the force needs us. Mankind needs us. We’re knights—”

“No, you’re a knight! I’m a waitress! Remember?”

“Yet, you’re the best hunter on the squad.”

I laughed, but not so much in humor. “Just because I’m good at it doesn’t mean I want to keep doing it. I can’t take another year of this mess.” I shook my head. “I just can’t…”

“Come here, babe.” He pulled me into his embrace and cuddled me. “You’re just going through withdrawal, missing the life you used to have. We all go through it.” Rocking his hips, he pressed his bulged groin against me and kissed the corner of my mouth. “I got a little something to remedy that. Let’s bust a quickie before we show up for duty.”

“Ugh, you’re such a pig! And you smell like vampires. That’s not sexy.” I shoved him away, and reclaimed the G-four I had put back. “Let’s go and get this mission over with.”

No matter how many times I said it, or how many different ways I put it, he would never get it. The only way to get through to him was to walk away from him and away from this war he’d dragged me into, but I couldn’t find it in myself to do it. Maybe because deep inside, I didn’t want to let him down. But how long could I keep living for him before this war finally claimed my life?

More than a few minutes had passed by before I started thinking that maybe my attempts to woo a hit woman were in vain. Here I am standing at the door, staring at the doorknob like an idiot, willing it to turn. “Shit.” And I was so sure she would come.

I sat the second flute down and fished out my cell phone. I fingered in the desired code to locate my anxiously awaited date. According to the small green dot on the screen, she was still in this area.

I zoomed in. Actually, she’s near the building.

I zoomed in further. No, she’s in the building.

Closer. No wait, she’s…

Something hard pressed into my lower back. Icy terror and sexual excitement spiraled through me. I didn’t know whether I should turn around and face her, or stay rooted to the floor in this position with my eyes glued on the door.

After a few seconds that ticked by like hours, I released the breath I’d been holding and took a sip of the champagne. “Thank you for coming.” I finally said. “Would you like some champagne?”

She leaned against me; her breasts pressed into my back. “I have only one question to ask you, then after that, my business with you is done.”

“What will you do after your business is done?” I dared to ask.

“I’ll do away with you, and then all of the women you’ve mistreated over the years can dance on your grave.”

“Surely, you can think of some way I can entertain you before you do away with me.”

As if annoyed, she clucked her tongue. “How did you know you were my mark? Furthermore, how did you get my number?”

“That’s two questions.”

“It’d be wise of you to answer them both since I have a loaded pistol pressed into your spine.”

Smiling, I took another sip. “I do believe you have more than just a pistol pressed into my back, sweetheart.” The barrel dug in deeper, making me wince.

“I am not your sweetheart.”

“Yet.”
