Within the Shadows Teaser

Her sharp gaze returned to me, and I instantly recoiled like a frightened puppy. I wanted to say something, anything, to shatter the overwhelming silence that fed my anxiety. But what came out was, “My sisters…they just got here from Korea. I was going to make them my favorite American meal.”

The second the words tumbled out of my mouth, I wanted to crawl into a corner and die. 

What the hell was that? 

Out of all the things to say, I blurted out some nonsense like I was back in grade school, crushing on the prettiest girl in class.

A quick smirk touched her lips before her expression hardened again. “What’s your name, sir?”

I swallowed hard. “Gi-Hun.”

Turning, she nodded for me to follow her. “Grab your groceries and come with me, Gi-Hun.”

I pushed to my feet, legs shaky beneath me. With trembling hands, I hurriedly scooped up the spilled groceries and shoved them back into the bag before following her. As we made our way through the store, I noticed the crimson splatters along the floor, a chilling reminder of the savage attack on innocent shoppers. 

My gaze drifted to the katana strapped between her shoulder blades. For a moment, all I could think about was how she casually walked around with that weapon like it was normal. It wasn’t like carrying a concealed pistol or dagger. It was a goddamn sword! 

A nagging question rose to the surface. 

What does she need a katana for? And who—or—WHAT is she cutting down with that thing?
