Havoc spun around and looked down at Derrick. “Why here? If I were a powerful demon-vampire building a coven, I wouldn’t do it here in a funky ass, rundown neighborhood where my spawn would have to fight for scraps.”
“Oh-kay.” His eyes shifted and his lips pulled tight. “Imagining you as a vamp is making me nauseous. You’re already mean as fuck. Becoming a vamp would make you so much worse. And this neighborhood wasn’t always like this. I grew up here.”
Looking at the rows of battered and deteriorated houses, Havoc shook her head. “Yeah, but I’m talking about the here and now. This area—it’s not the right vibe. So why?”
Although vamps were loners by nature, they enjoyed the finer things in life. Big money, luxurious houses, extravagant clothing… Creatures who could charm their way into wealthy living didn’t choose poverty as a cover under any circumstances. So why would a demon vampire choose a deteriorated neighborhood as a coven base?
Suddenly, something Dante said sprang to mind, making her perk up. “Aw hell. The portal.”
They’re drawn to it. The dark mana. Dammit, how did that slip my mind?
“Oh, you’re talking about the liquid mirror?” Derrick asked.
Havoc leaped on him and glared into his glimmering eyes. “Take me to it.”
“Are you crazy?”
“Yes.”
