Taking a deep breath, Havoc closed her eyes and tried to link with Cain. Sparks of his spiritual energy glimmered behind her shut lids. But as far as a mental connection, she got nada. Frustrated, she shifted her focus to Stormie and the others, only to get the same result. “Why was I able to cross over?” Havoc muttered more to herself.
“Dark and spiritual forces fuel your chaos. One would have to be a god to create a barrier strong enough to keep you out,” she said, her voice fluctuating from child to woman again. “Or Demetri. He’s not a God, but he carries the force of one.”
Havoc cut a side eye at her.
Blinking wildly, Maddie slapped her hands over her mouth and stammered, “Did—did I say something wrong?”
“That name…it makes my skin crawl. Demetri is a curse to all Hunters, so his name puts us on edge. It’s weird to hear someone other than Dante mention him so casually. Almost sounds like you know him personally.”
“I do. Well…” She paused, tapping her lips with her finger. “I know his high priestess very well, which means I know him. He may have a bad reputation with Hunters, but he’s not a bad guy. He’s actually really cool.”
“Really cool, you say?” she grumbled disparagingly. “He has killed hundreds of us.”
“Only the ones foolish enough to challenge him. He doesn’t go out looking for Hunters, Havoc. They seek him out.”
“Whateva. He’s the devil, a pretty ass diabolical muthafucka, and you can’t convince me otherwise.”
