“I’m so sorry to come to you like this, my lord,” the fanged spawn uttered in a childlike tone, maintaining his bowed position. “But the situation is urgent.”
“Dante, what are you waiting for? Kill the master to destroy the lot.” Impatience carried Alessio’s voice as he bellowed across the vast field, arms outstretched. “C’mon, we don’t have all damn day!”
“What is it you need from me, little priestess?” Dante asked. “And I suggest you talk fa—”
Alessio burst toward them in shifting speed, slicing through the corpses in his path.
Amid the intense moment, the girl’s softly spoken words pierced between them. “Havoc needs you.”
Alessio was on them in a quickness, sweeping his blade with deadly intent. A deafening swish was followed by the thunderous clash of swords as Dante blocked the strike inches from the possessed vampire’s neck. The impact sent a reverberating shockwave across the field, shaking the ground beneath their feet.
Holding his brother’s sword at bay, Dante bored into the creature’s eyes. “What do you mean?” The words trickled out of his mouth as a triggered response, even though he knew exactly what she meant. His heart trembled. Every instinct in him wanted to conjure a drift cloud and leave immediately without questioning this strange child’s motive.
Alessio ripped his sword back, making the two steels shriek in protest. “You wanna explain what the fuck is going on?”
“I…” Dante swallowed hard, desperately reaching for his connection with Joan. “I don’t sense any panic or despair in her heart.” To his relief, calm determination spiraled through her soul. But that could change at the drop of a dime. Especially considering Joan could go from zero to a hundred in a split second.
